The
International Society for Travel Writing (ISTW) was formed in
1997 to promote the study, teaching, and discussion of travel writing
in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The first group of
participants contributed to the six-volume Dictionary of Literary
Biography series on American and British travel writers.
Since 1997, the group has planned two conferences and expanded its areas of interest to include travel writing in the ancient and Early Modern period, the eighteenth century to the present, as well as literature of travel, exploration, discovery, and adventure. Travel writing is cross-disciplinary in its appeal. Members of many disciplines are welcome to attend the conference and join ISTW: literary studies, history, sociology, anthropology, indigenous studies, political science, American studies, environmental studies, and media studies. If you are interested in joining ISTW, please contact: Professor
