ENG 281:
Introduction toEnglish Studies

What are the different fields within English? What are their histories? How do they relate? What theoretical or critical perspectives are important? How does one employ them?

This course examines five genres within English studies--drama, poetry , novels, short narrative and film. You will be introduced to a variety of critical approaches, and you will develop a critical vocabulary and the skills of literary analysis.

Introduction to English Studies is not a lecture-centered class that simply distributes information. It is a training ground, and it is a learning community that produces knowledge. Each member of the class will contribute ideas, energy, and writings for the better understanding of his or her colleagues.
