English Department Web Server

The English Department has its own web site, and faculty and staff are welcome to request an account so that they may create their own sites within the main department site (www.english.uwosh.edu) for use in their teaching and research.

For those who would like an account on the English department web site, you need to contact Academic Computing (acshelp@uwosh.edu or 424-3020). Make clear in your message that you want an account on the English department web server (www.english.uwosh.edu), not on the main university web server. Academic Computing will use your Oshkosh username as the default directory name. If your last name is different from your username, but you would like your full last name as your directory on the server, just tell them that in your email.

If you need special privileges (that is, access to other parts of the department site other than your own directory), you should contact Cary, and he will arrange to have your account created with the appropriate settings.

Please note: these web page accounts are separate from the university Novell network accounts that you may have for logging in to the network in your office or in the labs.

Once Academic Computing has created your account, they will send you instructions for changing your default server password (required) and for accessing your account to begin uploading your pages.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONNECTING TO THE ENGLISH DEPT SERVER

Depending on how you choose to connect (either a standalone FTP program or the file transfer feature within your web design software, as in Dreamweaver), you will have to tell the program how to connect to the English department server. There will be two key pieces of information you'll need:

1) the Host Name/Address > ftp.www.uwosh.edu

2) the folder/directory on the server (also called the remote site) >
/information/www.english.uwosh.edu/“username”/
(replace “username” in the example below with your directory name)

Users should also note that, when you connect, you’ll be able to move around and copy files from the entire department site. You cannot, however, upload, write over, or delete files in any directory for which you do not have privileges.

For further information on creating web pages, please contact Sandy Brucks(brucks@uwosh.edu) or Ben Simon (simonb89@uwosh.edu). They will assist you in choosing the appropriate software, creating pages, and managing your site.
