Who is Eligible?

Any student enrolled in any Writing-Based Inquiry Seminar (WBIS) during the Spring 2008 or Fall 2008 semesters. This includes Honors Composition (ENG 110), English 101, and CAPP WBIS. Essays may be nominated and delivered by instructors, who must include the entry form, signed by the student. Students may also self-nominate their essay; the entry form must be signed by the instructor.

Requirements:

  • Essays must have been submitted for a grade in WBIS (188), ENG 110, ENG 101, or CAPP (revised essays acceptable).
  • One submission per writer, please. (Previous winners may not reapply.)
  • Instructors should limit their nominations to five students per semester, across all sections (not five students per section)
  • Submit three copies.
  • No names on any pages of the essay or assignment sheet: not the writer's name; not the instructor's name!
  • Entries must be proofread and free of instructors’ comments.
  • The entry form, below, must be submitted with the essay. No essays will be accepted without instructor certification.
  • Winners will be invited to receive prizes at the University Awards Ceremony (April 2009)
  • You will be notified of the award by your UW Oshkosh email address and by regular post; we will not email any private accounts (not hotmail or Yahoo, etc.)

  • Procedure:

    1. After the essay is graded, revise it.  Print out a clean, proofread copy.  Make sure your name is not on any page of the essay.  (Your name will appear only on the attached entry form.)
    2. Ask your instructor to certify that the essay is based on a class assignment.  (No essays will be accepted without instructor certification.) Make sure the instructor's name is removed from the assignment and the essay.
    3. Deliver three copies of the essay and three copies of the assignment, with the entry form attached, to Radford 216 ( or mail to Nevin James Writing Contest, Department of English, 800 Algoma Boulevard, University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, 54901).  Double check to make sure you have included a copy of the assignment sheet or a typed description of the original assignment for which the essay was written.

Did we mention that there should be no names on the essay or assignment?
NO names! Not yours. Not your instructor's!
