Title : Joy to the World: Celebration in the Collective Spirit

Course: WBIS 188

Section: 006

Instructor: Pamela Gemin

How did today's rock festivals, Super Bowls, and other spirited gatherings evolve? And why do those in power often work to suppress or exploit the collective spirit? This course will examine the phenomenon of group elation as witnessed in the history of collective rituals from ancient times to the present day. Using Barbara Ehrenreich's Dancing in the Streets: A History of Collective Joy as a main text, we will also consider the darker side of collective emotion incorporated by cults and charismatic leaders.
