Writing-Based Inquiry Seminars:
Descriptions for Spring 2008
(please note: section topics and descriptions are subject to change)
Title: Local Colors & American Regions
Course: WBIS 188
Section: 001
Instructor: Bergoffen
Consider what sights, voices, and perspectives come to mind when you think of Wisconsin, the (gothic) South, the (mythic) West, New York City, or any other region of the United States. We will read a range of texts--fiction (stories), non-fiction, poems, and essays--and examine diverse regional textures in the American experience. The following questions will guide our discussions: In what ways do these readings challenge or reinforce our assumptions about a given place? What history or social conditions or point of view do authors try to convey through a "local" lens? Students interested in American Studies are encouraged to enroll.
