Title: American Political Comedy
Course: WBIS 188
Section: 002, 016
Instructor: Mueller
In this course, we will consider the persistent overlap of humor and politics in America. We will address such questions as: How does humor help to shape politics and policy in contemporary American Society? Can politicians use humor to their advantage? Must we--as politicians, columnists, filmmakers, talk show hosts, political observers, everyday citizens or residents--take responsibility for the political implications of our humor? In telling a joke? In laughing at one? Our explorations will be informed by humor theory in various disciplines (psychology, philosophy, sociology, linguistics, cultural studies), which will help us explore such foundational issues as: Why do we laugh? What purpose does humor serve for individuals? For society?
