Session Overview
During a session, the tutor will
- ask the writer questions about his or her paper. These questions are designed to help students think critically about their own writing.
- provide honest, productive comments related to any element of the paper (style, organization, grammar, etc.) that the writer specifies.
- actively listen to the concerns and ideas students have about their papers.
- note aspects of the paper that the tutor believes need attention.
- maintain high standards of professional conduct at all times.
As active participants in the tutorial, students should
- come to the session prepared and ready to work.
- be willing to participate in the writing and rewriting process.
- allow enough time between the tutorial and the assignment due date to make suggested revisions. The tutor’s suggestions are of no value if there is not enough time to revise before handing in the paper.
- be open about the problems they are having with the paper or ideas.
- be willing to accept constructive criticism and helpful suggestions.
- be ready to communicate the conditions of the writing assignment. The more the tutor knows about the instructor's requirements and expectations, the more he or she can help.
